Malawi’s flag, which was adopted in 1964, is a horizontal tribar made up of three equally sized stripes; black (top – for the people of Africa), red (middle – for the blood shed in struggles for independence), and green (bottom – for lush vegetation). Resting center of the top black stripe is the image of a red rising half sun - representing the dawn of freedom and hope on the African continent.
