The Burundi flag was adopted in 1957. It consists of a white St. Andrews Cross dividing the banner into four triangles; red triangles at the top and bottom, and green triangles at the left and the right. At the center of the cross is a white circle containing three red six point stars – each of which is bordered in green. These three stars in refer to the words in the national motto "Unité, Travail, Progrès" (French for "Unity, Work, Progress").
